Crisis Comm

Communication that keeps working when the network drops.

The problem

In an emergency the network is often the first thing to go. That is exactly when you need to stay connected.

  • Staying in touch with the people close to you, without internet or mobile coverage.
  • Sending a distress signal that arrives, device to device.
  • Reaching through concrete and basements, where the signal normally stops.

What we built

Crisis Comm is a mobile app that keeps working without internet or a mobile network, from a power cut to a war zone. The phones nearby form a local network over Bluetooth Low Energy, so messages and emergency statuses travel from device to device.

Where concrete and basements smother the Bluetooth signal, our own hardware takes over. A compact BLE extender built around an ESP32: one half picks up the signal from the app, the other half sends it on, with ten metres of data cable in between that you simply roll out. The network runs straight through the wall that would otherwise stop it.

We were looking for a way to keep people connected in an emergency, even when everything else fails. When software alone was not enough, we built the hardware ourselves.
